Self-Evaluation – Photography and Typography

In this project we had to think of a protest idea for photography and for typography. The idea I chose for both was animal rights and our environment.

Once I had my Ideas in mind I started to take photos on the theme of environment. I enjoyed going around the college and my house in order to take the photos this is due to me needing to find what was relevant to the theme of environment and how I would convey my message. What I took my photos on were things such as rubbish on the streets and pavement, birds in urban environments, nature surrounded by bins and discarded items on grass.

While doing the project it really wasn’t hard to find places to take photos due to the world being sadly filled with rubbish and and urban environments intruding on nature. I was able to take all the photos in one day, but also I took some extra photos before I started taking my main photos and even used some of those extra photos in the final protest piece. The typography protest piece was a little bit more of a challenge due to me having to learn how to use Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop, a great help was the tutorials on the server that gave step by step guides on how to use them and as time progressed I understood more and more how to use them. In the end I was able to make my protest poster with animated text that I learned from another tutorial the expressive typography animation “The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog”.

Out of both of the projects the one I enjoyed most doing was making the poster for animal rights this is due to it entailing drawing, imagination and me needing to think how I would convey my message to the viewer. Although I enjoyed taking photos for the environment protest I didn’t like it as much as the poster work, one reason is because although I respect photography for what it is as an art form and way of expression it is not one of the subjects that interests me though I still don’t mind taking photographs once in a while for projects and work. Another thing I liked about both of the projects was the themes I chose for my protest piece that being stated above, the reason I liked it is because I really feel ecstatic about animals and to some degree the same with the environment so it wasn’t a boring project for me to be working on.

Strength:  The strengths I felt I had in these projects was thinking up the idea for what I was going to do, drawing and coloring my poster digitally and taking photos based on the human effects on the environment. I felt these practical things I was doing were the biggest strengths I had because I did them to the best of my ability and felt that the final products came out the way I wanted and how I want viewers to see it. Also with me thinking up my idea it was simple it was what was going to be portrayed that had me use my imagination on what I would create.

Weakness: The weakness I felt I had was at the beginning of constructing my poster I had to learn both Adobe programs beforehand in order to create my poster, but the good thing is it didn’t take to long due to the server tutorials.
